Rational Equilibrium Asset-Pricing Bubbles in Continuous Trading Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study rational equilibrium asset-pricing bubbles in an economic environment in which agents are allowed to trade continuously, including as special cases some models from financial economics. For positive net supply assets, we present new necessary and sufficient conditions for the absence of bubbles in complete and incomplete markets equilibria with several types of borrowing constraints. For zero net supply assets, including financial derivatives with finite maturities, we show that bubbles can generally exist and have properties different from their discrete-time, infinite-horizon counterparts. We introduce a probabilistic approach to studying bubbles, generalizing analogs of existing results in the discrete-time bubbles literature. Rational asset pricing bubbles and portfolio constraints
This article shows that portfolio constraints can give rise to rational asset pricing bubbles in equilibrium even if there are unconstrained agents in the economy who can benefit from the induced limited arbitrage opportunities. Furthermore, it is shown that bubbles can lead to both multiplicity and real indeterminacy of equilibria. The general results are illustrated by two explicitly solved e...
متن کاملAsset pricing dynamics in complete markets
The standard general equilibrium asset pricing models typically undertake two common assumptions of homogeneous agents and rational expectations equilibrium. However, this context sometimes yields outcomes that are inconsistent with reality like negligible trading volume. In order to explain the overwhelming evidence of trading volume, I would need to develop a model where the usual no-trade th...
متن کاملRational Asset Pricing Bubbles and Debt Constraints
Rational price bubble arises when the price of an asset exceeds the asset’s fundamental value, that is, the present value of future dividend payments. The important result of Santos and Woodford (1997) says that price bubbles cannot exist in equilibrium in the standard dynamic asset pricing model with rational agents facing borrowing constraints as long as assets are in strictly positive supply...
متن کاملComplex dynamics in equilibrium asset pricing models with boundedly rational, heterogeneous agents
We study a simple model based upon the Lucas framework where heterogeneous agents behave rationally in a fully intertemporal setting but do not know other investors’ personal preferences, wealth or investment portfolios. As a consequence, agents initially do not know the equilibrium asset pricing function and must make guesses which they update via adaptive learning with constant gain. We demon...
متن کاملStock Market Bubbles in the Laboratory
Trading at prices above the fundamental value of an asset, i.e. a bubble, has been verified and replicated in laboratory asset markets for the past seven years. To date, only common group experience provides minimal conditions for common investor sentiment and trading at fundamental value. Rational expectations models do not predict the bubble and crash phenomena found in these experimental mar...
